Light a Candle for Elephants at Our Peaceful Vigil on the Chinese New Year

New years are a time for new beginnings. They are a time for remembrance, and a time for hope.

This Thursday, February 19, is the Chinese New Year. We invite you to join us on Thursday to mark the Chinese New Year with a peaceful vigil for elephants at the Embassy for the People’s Republic for China.

During our vigil, we will remember the elephants we have lost. Join us as we light a candle in memoriam of the 4,800 elephants who have been slain for their ivory since January 1, 2015.

During the vigil, we will also share our hope for the future. We will light candles for future generations who deserve a world where elephants still exist. We will show China that the American people are taking action to save this majestic keystone species, and urge the Chinese government and people to do the same.

How the People of China Can Save the Elephant

Every day, illegal poachers murder approximately 100 elephants a day for their tusks to feed a global market hungry for ivory products. As the world’s largest consumer of ivory products, China is home to dozens of ivory carving factories that churn out thousands of trinkets made from thousands of dead elephants. China consumes 50 percent (or more) of the ivory from poached elephants.

Wildlife experts agree unanimously that ending the demand for ivory in China could save elephants from their impending extinction.

During our vigil, we will encourage the Chinese government to close its ivory carving factories and take other steps to end its ivory trade. We will encourage the people of China to stop buying ivory. The fate of elephants lies in the balance.

We also call on China to forbid baby elephant imports from countries where ecosystems are being destroyed by bandits, transnational criminals, and terrorists across the continent of Africa.

  1. If I could be there, I would. I have to be in court on Thursday in Houston so unable to travel to DC. I was thinking…how could you show our support for the people who want to be at an embassy but can’t? Extra candles in our name, poster with our names. Short notice, I know, but I bet there are more people like me who feel the same and want their presence known as well.
